Top 10 players on twitter !

Twitter has become all the rage in football, connect to the fans in a direct way, quick and easy to use and best of all you only need a vocabulary capable of generating sentences of 140 characters or less. Footballers are lining up to write about anything and everything on their minds. As I'm sure you can imagine, some are better than others. Here are Sport.co.uk's Top 10 footballing Twitterati.

1. Darren Bent
– Fancy a move up north after your last move didn't quite work out? Why not try pushing the transfer through by complaining about everyone at your current club in full knowledge that 30,000 followers and the media are watching? Darren did just that. Fortunately for him his superb form since making the move as well as the unbelievably high amount of their huge outlay Spurs managed to recoup on his transfer has softened the blow for both sides.

2. Wayne Rooney
– Wayne writes about everything, how he's playing, Colleen's pregnancy and some of his other world views. Asked whether he liked Turkey before the Besiktas game he replied that he did. With stuffing and potatoes. I think it was a joke but who can tell? As the World Cup draws nearer and nearer, Wayne could well be your best bet for all the latest gossip in the England camp, and why it all went wrong afterwards. Or follow his mrs...

3. Bojan Krcic
– The Barcelona youngster tweets mostly in Spanish, but he writes in English every now and then too. If you care to follow him you  can read about football, predictably, the history of Spanish terrorist group ETA and other things too. Insightful stuff from the Spaniard about growing up in the legendary Barca youth production line.

4. Brad Guzan
– Brad isn't much of a talker, generally he can sum what's he up to in a couple of words. 'Sleep'. 'Game tomorrow'. That sort of thing. It's not exactly Dickins, but worth a place in this list for the bemusing contrast it offers between the amiable and talkative Guzan and his uninspiring monosyllabic prose.

5. Juan Pablo Angel
 – Remember Juan Pablo Angel? Well, he's playing at New York Red Bulls now and he's quite a chatty guy. If you want to know what the Columbian is having for lunch or how he's managed to injure himself, and believe me, it seems to happen frequently, this is the source for you.

6. Rio Ferdinand – Reading Rio's Twitter is a bit like reading a 13 year old's phone, everything's 'gr8' and Sir Alex is the 'gaffa', but Ferdinand replies to a huge number of fans and is an undeniably nice guy trying to give something back. Frankly I'd rather that something was status updates than the ball to the opposition, if only Rio.

7. Mikel Arteta – Everton's Spanish senastion certainly has time on his hands, perhaps proof that Twitter can aid injury recovery. Passionate twittering from Arteta, talking about how his knee is doing, and recently some amusing bating of Phil Neville's passing ability.

8. Steven Gerrard– Rumours abound that this one isn't real, can 40,000 followers be wrong? Stevie G writes about what he knows, football, and he even had time to wish Michael Owen all the best joining the enemy at Old Trafford. Probably evidence for the fake account argument but it's nice to think there might be some goodwill there.

9. Paul Scholes
 – You know Paul Scholes, man of few words, does his talking on the pitch and so on? He's on Twitter, catch him writing about Chinese takeaway, Britain's Got Talent and bacon sandwiches. Again, this one has all the hallmarks of an imposter, the ginger assassin doesn't seem a Britain's Got Talent kind of guy to me.

10. Cristiano Ronaldo – If you don't like Cristiano Ronaldo, his attitude, his petulance,  his arrogance, then this might be the CR7/9 source for you. It's all in Portuguese. I can only imagine his most recent post reads 'he tried to bring me down but I stayed on my feet' or, 'I implored him not to but he reached in to his pocket and sent the defender off'.
